Surprise Cranes

Jul 3 2015 1:31 PM

I made a short visit to the farm this morning, with the intention of checking for migrant waders. However, it was something of a surprise to get out the of car and immediately clap eyes on two Cranes feeding on North Screed. We were fortunate to have two visit the farm in March/April 2012, when they spent 10 days here. A July record, however, is rather unexpected, although there is a previous record of two near Sherburn in late June to August 2002. Today's birds frequented the exact same field as those in 2012, so clearly there is something Cranes like about this field!

Common Crane

I did manage to find some passage waders with two Green Sandpipers the first of the autumn here, plus the first Teal for a while. Also present were two Little Egrets and a calling Quail.
